Backstory
I launched Rocumentaries as a small side project in 2016. I'm no expert, just someone who loves a good doc (and apparently watches a hell of a lot of them).
I wanted to build the thing I wish existed: a place where I could find awesome docs and save time watching bad ones. I designed and built a site, filled it with films I liked, and threw it on Product Hunt with no expectations.
Surprisingly, it received over 1000+ upvotes (one of their all-time highest upvoted products 🏆😲). I added a truckload more docs, grew the mailing list and sent out weekly newsletters.
But the site was difficult to update and maintain. I'm a designer by trade and never been much of a developer. Plus it's a surprising amount of work to watch, catalogue, and write weekly newsletters!
Eventually life happened in SO many ways (🎢), and I sadly totally lost momentum. The project went cold, and I've spent the last few years re-stabilising and focussing on other things.
v2.0
But the site has still received steady traffic. I've thought about resurrecting the project a number of times over the years, but haven't had the time or the energy. I needed a new MVP that made the project easy to run.
It suddenly occurred to me I could use Notion to rebuild the site as a easily updatable able database, and Super to to turn it into a site.
And that I did.
Welcome to the new Rocumentaries. It's not perfect due to tech and time constraints, but I hope you enjoy the updated collection as much as I have. I plan to continue to improve the site, and grow the collection and mailing list at a sustainable pace.
Thanks so much for all the love and support so far! It's very much appreciated 💛
